The History of the Sturmabzeichen:

On June 1st 1940 , the Sturmabzeichen (General Assault Badge - GAB) was created as an award to Pioneer troops. Later on eligibility was extended to other support personnel like artillery, anti-tank crews and anti-aircraft crews. To win this award a soldier was required to take part in three assaults on three different days armed with only hand held weapons. On June 22nd 1943 , a numbered version of the GAB was introduced with the same grades as the Panzer Assault Badge.
