The History of the Infanterie - Sturmabzeichen:

On December 20th 1939 , the Infanterie - Sturmabzeichen (Infantry Assault Badge - IAB) was created as an award for infantry and mountain infantry troops. Later on ( June 1st 1940 ) the badge was awarded in a bronze version to soldiers of motorised infantry units. To qualify for this award, a soldier was required to take part in three assaults, on three different days, armed with only hand held weapons.
