The History of The Luftwaffe badges:

The Pilot Badge (Flugzeugführerabzeichen) design was based on a vertical silver wreath with dark grey eagle superimposed over the center of the wreath. The badge was presented with the military pilot’s license on completion of flying training.

The Combined Pilot Observer Badge (Gemeinsames Flugzeugführer-und Beobachterabzeichen) design was identical to the Pilot Badge design, except that the wreath was gold and eagle was silver. It was awarded to the pilots who held both pilot’s and an observer’s certificate for at least one year.

The Observer Badge (Beobachterabzeichen) design was based on a large enclosed eagle holding a swastika. Observers, navigators and bomb aimers received the award at the end of two months service with a non operational squadron, or, after five combat sorties. In some cases it was awarded after only one mission when the man was wounded.

The Air Gunner Badge / Radio Operator Badge (Fliegerschützenabzeichen mit / ohne Blitzbündel) featured a flying eagle, with or without lighting bolts in its talons. The badge was for radio operators, air gunners and flight engineers. The award criteria were the same as for the Observer badge.

The Retired Aircrew Badge (Flieger Erinnerungsabzeichen) was for personnel honourably discharged from flying duties.

All these badges were instituted by Adolf Hitler on March 26 1936.
